October is History Month!

History Month is coming! Once again, HCSCC members are planning a series of very special events to celebrate and illuminate our historical heritage.

Each weekend in October, selected museums and associations are highlighting some aspect of life in the past that provides perspective on current-day affairs. Times and dates given below are for special History Month observations. Check the members page for links to obtain normal hours of operation for HCSCC member organizations.

Events during October

Saturday, October 2

Hidden Villa: Saturdays on the Farm for Kids For ages 6-10. Kids will visit with the farm animals, participate in a fun garden project and take to the wilderness - hiking and playing games along the trails. Be prepared to get dirty!
$45 for series

Sunday, October 3

Hidden VIlla: Cow Wow! Rise early to milk the cow! Learn fun cow facts, proper milking techniques and how to make butter. Ages 5 and up.
8 - 11 a.m. Adults, $15, Children $10

Santa Clara Arts & Historical Consortium: Open House at the Headen-Inman House. Visitors may explore the Santa Clara Historic Museum and the Los Fundadores "Founders and Pioneers Room" which are both housed in the historic Headen-Inman House.

Other activities on the grounds outside the house will include music, face painting, one-act plays, a display of vintage automobiles, artists sketching caricatures, information tables manned by Santa Clara City Library, the Genealogy Society, the Harris-Lass Museum and other cultural and historical organizations. Tickets for the Santa Clara Historic Home Tour in December will also be on sale.

Thursday, October 7

Gilroy Museum: All about Gilroy Hot Springs with Teddy Goodrich, Coe Park Docent and educator. The evening's festivities include a wine and cheese reception co-sponsored by the Gilroy Historical Society.
6 p.m., 195 Fifth Street. Admission is free but RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST. Call (408) 848-0470 (by 5:00 pm, Monday, Oct. 4th) to reserve a space.

Saturday, October 9

Berryessa Adobe (City of Santa Clara): Built in the 1840s, the Berryessa Adobe is one of the last adobes in the Santa Clara Valley. Now owned by the City of Santa Clara, it is being opened and is an interpretive site on the Juan Bautista De Anza National Historic Trail. Opening Ceremony followed by an open house and self-guided tours of the Adobe and Garden.

Santa Clara City Central Park Library: Santa Clara City History in Pictures. Local historian Bea Lichtenstein will introduce her new book: Santa Clara : a Pictorial History with an entertaining slide show highlighting the history of Santa Clara. Bea's book is part of the "Images of America" series published by Arcadia Press. The photographs in the book and the silde show come from historical collections at the Santa Clara Historic Museum, the Santa Clara City Library, and Santa Clara City Hall.

Museums of Los Gatos: Lecture: Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Los Gatos Ford Opera House- Gold Rush author Jim Holliday Speaks on Few Women, Fewer Rules: California's Wild Men and the State They Formed.

The relative absence of the fairer sex - coupled with lots of money and no societal rules telling them to behave - made men go wild in California. Step back in time 100 years into the tin-paneled Opera House, and hear master historian Jim Holliday regale us with ribald tales of the wild times spawned by the Gold Rush... It put its stamp on us for good - we're still willing to take incredible risks, make and lose fortunes, and get a little wilder than our neighbors in other Western states.

Hidden Villa: Green Remodeling Fair: Learn about products that can help green your next home remodeling project. Visit with vendors, attend talks and see examples of green building practices.
Noon - 5 p.m. Admission: $10 per person.

Sunday, October 17

History San Jose: Autumn Festival: Celebrate the beginning of fall and the harvest at History Park! Families will enjoy a wide variety of activities focused on harvest and autumn necessities. Hands-on harvest crafts for children and their families will include making a rag rug, candle-dipping, making a scarecrow, leaf rubbings and carding wool. Our favorite bee man and his helpers from 4-H will introduce visitors to bee-keeping and honey harvesting using the active hives at History Park. As always, buildings will be open with docents to share information about autumn in the Valley.

California Country 19th Annual Fall Antique Americana Country and Folk Art Show & Sale Sponsored by the Los Altos History Museum. Picnic Foods and Live Country Music, with over 50 dealers from across the nation. Enter Card for $100 Shopping Spree - Drawing at 2 pm.

Palo Alto Historical Association: History Trivia Event, fun and games with Palo Alto history. Let your trivial pursuits win you a prize! Traveling trunk exhibit, photo opportunities, ice cream at 1932 prices. Event staged by the Palo Alto History Museum Project Committee. Pick up trivia quiz forms at the Museum of American Heritage, 351 Homer and at the main Palo Alto Library history desk.

de Saisset Museum: Peaceful Painter: A Lecture on Hisako Hibi by Kristine Kim - Please join Kristine Kim, Director of Program Initiatives at the Japanese American National Museum and co-curator of the exhibition Peaceful Painter, for a slide lecture on Hibi's work. After the lecture, Kim will be available to sign copies of the Peaceful Painter publication recently published by Heyday Books.

Campbell Historical Museum: Spooky, Spooky Night - Ainsley House will open at night for Halloween tours and a devilish good time as we recreate the fun Halloween parties celebrated by the J.C. Ainsley family in its 1925 English Tudor home.

Designed for families, we will have hot cider, apples to dunk, candy and treats for the youngster, and wholesome snacks for all in the Carriage House, plus some games and hands-on activities for the children. We will then have a special flashlight tour of the house, explore some areas not usually available to the public, and tell some ghostly tales only heard at Halloween!
